Lower leg swellingāalso called edemaācan have many causes. At Achieve At Home PT/OT, we help patients manage swelling safely and effectively in the comfort of home.
š Common Types of Swelling:
1ļøā£ Dependent Edema
From sitting/standing too long or poor circulation. Often affects both legs and improves with movement and elevation.
2ļøā£ Lymphedema
Caused by blocked or damaged lymph nodes (often after surgery or cancer). Usually one-sided and can feel firm or heavy.
3ļøā£ Venous Insufficiency
When leg veins canāt send blood back to the heart properly. Leads to swelling, achiness, skin changes, or varicose veins.
4ļøā£ Post-Injury or Surgery
Localized swelling that comes with pain or stiffness. Controlled movement helps reduce it.
5ļøā£ Systemic Causes
Conditions like heart, kidney, or liver disease can cause swelling and should be co-managed with a medical team.
